Why YOU should write a blog

by Carissa Dunphy on January 10, 2011

Writing a BlogYes, YOU! When contemplating whether or not to start writing a blog most people say, “Why would anyone want to read what I have to say”?  You could be new to the Internet, en expert in your field or anywhere in between – your unique blogs will help others. Everyone fits within a niche; Find your niche and you have readers! If you’re a business owner of any size, have a hobby or just feel as though you want to get your voice out there, then you should write a blog. Why, you say?

Free exposure. You don’t have to pay for readers. After the cost of your domain name and hosting, there is no monetary cost, just the time it takes to write. Its not a daunting task-just put your thoughts into words  You can gain much Internet exposure by simply having keyword rich content and a place for people to find you. Your blog can also have pages that are sales tools, even just an “about” page. Readers can learn a little more about you and your experience which may aide in getting more readers or clients.

Share your expertise. People in the same niche as you need someone to learn from and a place to go to research, make that place be your blog. Your knowledge and lessons learned can help others. Also write about experiences that were difficult but made you stronger. Not only are they entertaining to read, but one mans pain is another mans gain.

Once you enter the blogosphere world, you will wonder why you hadn’t begun sooner.

Here’s a few tips to get you going:

Choose your domain name carefully. Make it easy to remember, not too long and choose a name that can withstand time. Many people simply choose YourName.com. You’ll also need your blog hosted. Ovaleye Cloud Services can do both of these for you.

Make it easy for people to read your blog. My blog offers both an RSS feed and an email subscription for readers, so they may choose their preferred reading method. It is a personal preference on how you read others blogs – I say offer both options and cover both bases (see both options in the top right corner).

Be available. I recommend allowing comments on your posts. This way readers can interact and give invaluable feedback. Also make sure you show your contact information. You can list it all or just the minimum, which ever you’re comfortable with. The easier it is to reach you, the better. You wouldn’t want someone to go to a competitor due to lack of contact details.

Get readers. Start off by emailing family and/or close friends, tell them about your blog and ask for input. Put your new blog URL in your email signature. Comment on others blogs using your blog address (there’s a spot for it in comment forms).

I love reading what my favorite bloggers have to say. I get ideas, answers, realizations and knowledge. Many of the blogs I read regularly I would have never known about (the writer) if the blog did not exist. Feel free to comment or email me if you need any help! Now get out there and start blogging!
